Today, we celebrate Bourdain Day, a day dedicated to the memory of the late Anthony Bourdain, who would have been celebrating his 67th birthday today. It’s been five years since his departure, yet his influence resonates in our ever-evolving world. Bourdain, a chef, author, and television personality, was more than just a culinary enthusiast; he was a cultural icon who used food as a medium to explore the human condition.

In a world where artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly prevalent, Elon Musk has taken over Twitter, and conflicts like the war in Ukraine dominate headlines, Bourdain’s ethos of understanding, acceptance, and shared humanity feels more relevant than ever. He was a man who would have likely had a lot to say about the rise of anti-Semitism, the current food trends, and even the way we’ve immortalized him with graffiti art and murals.

Bourdain was a man of the world, a man of the people. He was a teacher who showed us that life, in all its complexity, is beautiful and worth celebrating. He taught us that life could be gritty and unfair, yet the shared experiences, communal meals, and stories told over a pint at a mostly empty bar make it all worthwhile. In his own words,

“Eat at a local restaurant tonight. Get the cream sauce. Have a cold pint at 4 o’clock in a mostly empty bar. Go somewhere you’ve never been. Listen to someone you think may have nothing in common with you. Order the steak rare. Eat an oyster. Have a Negroni. Have two. Be open to a world where you may not understand or agree with the person next to you, but have a drink with them anyways. Eat slowly. Tip your server. Check-in on your friends. Check-in on yourself. Enjoy the ride.”

These words encapsulate Bourdain’s philosophy of life. He was a man who embraced the unfamiliar, sought to understand rather than judge, and found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He was a man who understood that we are all more alike than we are different and that we all yearn for love, acceptance, and a sense of belonging.

In today’s world, where division and discord often seem to overshadow our shared humanity, Bourdain’s legacy reminds us of the power of empathy, understanding, and shared experiences. His life and work inspire us to step out of our comfort zones, engage with the world around us, and celebrate the beauty of our shared human experience.

So, on this Bourdain Day, let’s honor his memory by living as he did — with curiosity, openness, and a deep appreciation for the diverse tapestry of human culture. Let’s remember that, in the end, we are all just people trying to make sense of this complex, beautiful, and sometimes painful world. And let’s remember to enjoy the ride.

Happy Bourdain Day. Here’s to the man who showed us the world, one meal at a time.
